Our business history
Connecticut Jig Grinding, LLC. (CJG) has been providing precision manufacturing services since our inception in 1969. Begun by
co-founders Don Green and George Welch in an 850 square foot "garage" in Plainville, Connecticut, we gained a reputation for
performing quality work in a very professional and timely manner. Current owner, Alan Green, began working at the shop after school in
1971. Sadly George passed away unexpectedly in the spring of 1973. By early 1980 our small quarters were quite cramped as we had
three jig grinders, three surface grinders, two Bridgeport millers, a bandsaw, an optical comparator, a lathe, a small tryout press and eight
full time employees. In 1979 we began offering wire EDM services through a sister company, New England Traveling Wire, Inc. (NETW) in a garage at a nearby location in New Britain, CT. NETW was founded by Don Green and James Dzwil.
In September, 1981 we moved everything to a new 8,000 square foot facility in New Britain, Connecticut, occupying one half of the floorspace. Once there we purchased a new jig grinder and moved in two more millers, a bandsaw, and three wire EDM machines from the NETW site.
In 1982 CNC jig grinding was added to our
list of capabilities using a portable, NC tape controlled, Andrews
slave table. To satisfy the need for limited short run proofing and
stamping a 45 ton L&J press was purchased in 1982. We occupied
the remaining floor space, when it became available in 1984. A fifth
jig grinder was bought in 1983 and a vertical machining center and a
small sinker EDM followed in 1985. Our wire EDM department was
utilizing five machines at this time. Our first non-dedicated PC
based CAM system was purchased in 1986 and two jig grinders were
traded for a new Moore G18-8400 continuous path jig grinder in 1987.
A CNC rotary table for the G18-8400 was purchased in
1996.
We have since added to our jig grinding
department a Moore G48 jig grinder with X and Y table travels of 48
inches by 24 inches with a maximum work piece height of 22 inches.
This machine was converted to full CNC capabilities in 1997. A CNC
sinker EDM was purchased to augment the manual sinker and provide
additional resources for our customers. NETW became a wholly owned
division of Connecticut Jig Grinding in October of 2000.
Recent Histoey
Due
to the major changes in manufacturing, and the retirement of the
co-founder of CJG, Don Green, in late 2004, we have narrowed
the focus of our manufacturing services. Firstly,
CJG moved to a new location at 34 Boyd Street in Winsted,
Connecticut, beginning operations there in Januaray, 2005.
Don's son, Alan Green, took over day to day operations at that time
and became the owner in July, 2006. CJG continues to
offer jig grinding services utilizing three Moore jig grinders, two
of which are CNC controlled. We also offer CNC macnining on
our VMC. We have several pieces of support equipment including
a lathe, miller, two surface grinders, a bandsaw, optical comparator
and other inspection equipment. For a complete list see our facilities list
page.
